Tough night for Lady Grangers

The LaGrange Lady Grangers stood toe-to-toe with Sandy Creek in the first half, but they were unable to keep pace in the final two quarters on the way to a 60-38 loss.

While Sandy Creek (19-4 overall) remained unbeaten in Region 5-AAAA with a 10-0 record, LaGrange (11-13 overall) fell to 3-8 in the region.

LaGrange, which is in sixth place in the region, finishes the regular season with a home game against Chapel Hill on Friday.

In Wednesday’s game, the Lady Grangers were down by nine points in the second quarter when they made a run to get within three.

Zaria Russell knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:17 left in the half to make it a five-point game.

Kylah Campbell made two free-throws 20 seconds later to trim Sandy Creek’s lead to 24-21.

Sandy Creek scored late in the second quarter to take a 26-21 lead, and that was the score at the half.

By the end of the third quarter the Lady Patriots led 39-29, and they outscored the Lady Grangers 21-9 in the fourth quarter to put it away.

Russell made a pair of 3-pointers and led LaGrange with 11 points, and Carmen McGhee added eight points.

Daija Powell scored 16 points and was one of three Sandy Creek players in double figures in points.
