The man shot in an accidental shooting Tuesday morning in LaGrange has died, according to Lt. Dale Strickland with the LaGrange Police Department.

The victim, 24-year-old Quydarius Weldon, was shot in the parking lot of the Pal Express 1 gas station on South Greenwood Street around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning. According to Strickland, Alazea Carr, 22, was playing with a gun when it went off and struck Weldon in the face. Strickland said it appeared Weldon had pulled a phone up, but it was unclear if he was recording anything.

Following the shooting, Weldon was taken to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center and was transported to a Columbus area hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Carr was arrested Tuesday on Murphy Avenue and was originally charged with VGCSA-possession of marijuana less 1 ounce, VGCSA-possession of schedule 4 controlled substance and tampering with evidence (felony). Strickland said her charges will be upgraded to include involuntary manslaughter, pointing a gun at another, reckless conduct, possession of firearm during commission of a crime and discharging a firearm under the influence of drugs.

“We are seeing more and more on social media where younger adults and kids are playing with these guns and making videos to go on social media,” Strickland said. “Pointing the guns at one another, pointing the guns at themselves, which is all a bad idea. You always treat a gun like it’s loaded and never point it at something you didn’t intend to destroy.”

Strickland said Carr is currently receiving medical treatment, but will be released into police custody.
