Panthers sweep doubleheader

It was a winning day for the LaGrange College baseball team, which swept a doubleheader from visiting Virginia Wesleyan on Friday.

LaGrange College won the opening game 6-5, and it finished the sweep with an 8-3 victory.

In the first game, the Panthers were trailing when they pushed two runs across in the bottom of the ninth inning to win it.

Joe Ruth started the game-winning rally with a base hit, and after a sacrifice bunt by E.J. Churchich, he scored on an Austin McDade double.

Liam Carbone kept things going with a base hit, and McDade scored the winning run on Dawson Weaver’s bunt.

McDade had two doubles with three RBIs, and Ruth had two hits and two RBIs.

Jack Layrisson had a double, and McKinley Erves and Judd Moore had hits.

Richie Post started and pitched 4 2/3 innings, and Spencer Douches threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win.

In the second game, it was tied 3-3 when the Panthers busted it open with five runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Ruth had two hits and three RBIs, and Chatham had two hits and two RBIs.

Ryan Ross and McDade each had a hit and an RBI, and Moore had a pinch-hit triple.

Liam Moreno and Weaver each had a hit.

JR Robinson started and pitched 7 1/3 solid innings, holding Virginia Wesleyan to two earned runs on seven hits.

Tanner Chafin pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to get the win.

The teams are schedule to conclude the three-game series today, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at LaGrange College.
