Troup tops Coffee County

HOOVER, Ala. – The Troup Tigers pushed a run across in the top of the eighth inning to beat Coffee County 3-2 on Friday in the Perfect Game Showcase at Hoover High.
Cooper Doughman singled and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Tigers the lead, and Daniel Martin retired the Trjoans in the bottom of the eighth to finish it.
Troup, which pushed a powerful IMG Academy squad to the limit on Thursday before losing 2-0, improved to 1-1 in the tournament that features an elite 24-team field.
In Friday’s game, Jackson got the job done on the mound.
Knox started and pitched four innings, and he held Coffee County to two hits and one unearned run while striking out four.
Martin, who threw a scoreless inning against IMG Academy, pitched the final four innings against Coffee County.
Martin allowed three hits and one run, and he had three strikeouts and no walks.
Offensively, the Tigers had six hits against a pair of pitchers.
Colby Williams, Trace Meadows, Doughman, Caleb McCurry, Cade Garner and Ethan Morton each had a hit.
McCurry and Morton had RBIs, and Meadows, Doughman and Garner scored the runs.
In the IMG Academy game, three Troup pitchers held a team that’s ranked number one in the country by USA Today to two hits and one earned run.
Colby Williams started, and he was dominant.
Williams, who has signed with Kennesaw State, limited IMG’s hitters to one hit and an unearned run, and he had eight strikeouts.
Next to the mound was freshman Carson Garner, and he was up to the challenge as well.
Garner pitched two innings, and he gave up one run on one hit.
Daniel Martin worked a perfect seventh inning, and he had a strikeout.
Cooper Doughman had two hits for Troup, and Caleb McCurry and Luke Purnell each had one hit.
