Lamar County rallies to upend Callaway

Lamar County notched a pair of late goals to rally for a 2-1 victory over Callaway on Monday in a Region 5-AA soccer match.

The Cavaliers took the lead just five minutes into the game on a goal by Tyler Lewis on an assist from Michael Everett.

It remained a 1-0 game until Lamar County scored with 15 minutes to play, and it scored the go-ahead goal with seven minutes remaining.

In Monday’s girls’ game, Lamar County took control early and eased to a 9-0 victory.

Both Callaway teams were coming off big region road wins over Jordan on Friday.

In the boys’ game, it went to overtime, and Callaway scored a pair of goals in the extra 15-minute period to win 5-3.

Joe Neese scored three goals, including both overtime goals, for his first career hat trick.

Also for Callaway, Neal Ellison scored his first career goal, and Lewis had a goal.

In the girls’ game, Callaway earned the 5-2 road win.

Keeley McGuffin led the way with two goals and an assist, and Marisa Acevedo, Tenisha Stubblefield and Ali-beth Thigpen each had a goal.

Callaway’s teams will be back home on Tuesday against region foe Temple, with the girls’ game starting at 5:30 p.m., and the boys’ game to follow.
