Some Democrats are now saying that any Democrat – moderate or progressive – is going to defeat President Trump in the 2020 presidential election. For example, Bernie Sanders repeatedly says that he will definitely beat Trump.

Why are the Democrats so optimistic when it comes to winning the 2020 election? First, they point to Trump’s high disapproval rating. From what I’ve seen, more Americans dislike him than like him. They maintain that Trump has failed miserably to lead the country in an orderly, constitutional way. Republicans like Jeb Bush say that Trump does not act like a president should. Trump’s constant tweeting is an example of what a traditional president would never do.

In saying all of this, I am here to tell you that Donald Trump may win in 2020. The Democrats are making a big mistake when they pontificate that Donald Trump will be easy to beat.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Why do I say this?

Let’s face it, Trump does have his problems. He is a consistent liar. He promised us all that Mexico would pay for the wall. I guarantee you Mexico never intended to do that. To me, this is the biggest lie he has ever told. Another lie concerns his relationships with women. To hear him talk, he is innocent of all charges. Scores of women have claimed that he propositioned them on numerous occasions. All of these women are not making up their stories.

To be objective and honest, I very much agree that President Trump is loved by Republicans. I used to think that Ronald Reagan was the most popular Republican of them all. I sincerely believe that Trump, among Republicans, is more beloved than Ronald Reagan.

Trump has also been able to accomplish many things. He has appointed Supreme Court Justices who now sit on the bench. Indeed, that is a momentous accomplishment for any president.  Trump has also been able to lower taxes for corporations and the rich. I personally have no problem with wealthy people. In my many years pastoring churches, my best members were the rich. It was they who always did their best to raise my salary significantly.  I agree with the President in his efforts with North Korea. Yes, Kim wants to keep his nuclear weapons, and nobody can take them away from him. To his credit, the President recognizes this.

I cannot predict who will win the presidency in 2020.  However, if the President does win, it would not surprise me.  Just like in 2016, the Democrats are overly confident they will win.  That is their downfall. Their overconfidence beat them in 2016. It may defeat them in 2020.
