One person has died and three others were treated for minor injuries Saturday after a kayaking accident that occurred on the Chattahoochee River in Chambers County.
According to Kerry Pickard with the East Alabama Fire Department, the four kayakers were not from the local area and did not know the river well. The identity of the person killed has not been released at this time and the incident is pending under investigation from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
“We deployed our swift water rescue team and deployed several rescuers,” Pickard said.
Pickard said the East Alabama Fire Department responded to the scene around 2 or 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon. He said there were eight or nine active rescuers deployed out to assist.
Pickard said none of the four kayakers had life jackets. The three people treated for minor injuries were taken to EAMC Lanier.
