Key series for Cavaliers

It’s a simple enough scenario for the Callaway Cavaliers.

Callaway has three games with Heard County this week, and if it wins one of them, it will finish no worse than second in Region 5-AA, meaning it would be at home for the opening round of the state playoffs.

If Heard County wins all three games, it would finish second, and Callaway would fall to third or fourth and be on the road for the first round of the playoffs.

Callaway still has an outside shot of finishing first, but it’s unlikely.

Callaway can win the region title if it beats Heard County three times, and Bremen loses its three games to Temple this week.

While Bremen is 11-1 in the region and 19-5 overall, Temple is 0-12 in the region, and it has only won one game all season.

Lamar County is 7-5 in the region, and it still has a chance to finish second if Callaway stumbles this week.

Lamar County closes its region schedule with three games against Jordan, which is 3-9 in the region.

Whatever happens this week, Bremen, Callaway, Lamar County and Heard County will be the region’s four representatives in the state playoffs.

Here are the region standings, and this week’s games.
