Facing a strong Pike County squad on its home field, LaGrange High’s boys’ soccer team won a 6-4 shoot-out on Tuesday night.

After taking a 3-0 lead at the half, it looked like the Grangers were going to enjoy a comfortable win.

The Pirates kept fighting, though, and they pulled even at 3-3, but it was the Grangers hanging on for the road win.

John McDonald led LaGrange with two goals, and Harrison Hunnicutt, Logan Lopez, Jimmy Cancino and Robert Reese had one goal apiece.

Cancino had two assists, and Alex Bowie, McDonald and Logan Lopez each had one assist.

The Grangers jumped on top 1-0 early, with McDonald making a penalty kick after Logan Lopez was fouled in the box.

Lopez and McDonald also scored in the first half, and the Grangers had a 3-0 lead at the break.

Back came Pike County, which strung together three consecutive goals to tie it.

With 7:36 to play, Hunnicutt scored to give the Grangers the lead, and McDonald found the net less than four minutes later to make it a 5-3 game.

After Pike County scored again to get within one, Reese’s goal with 29 seconds left capped the scoring.

In Tuesday’s girls’ game, a strong Pike County team broke open a close game in the second half on the way to a 6-1 win.

Pike County was up 2-1 at the half, and it outscored LaGrange 4-0 in the second half.

LaGrange’s teams will host Brookstone today, with the girls’ match beginning at 6 p.m., and the boys’ match to follow.

On Friday, LaGrange’s boys’ and girls’ teams will play for the Region 5-AAAA championship against Sandy Creek at Callaway Stadium.

Both LaGrange teams are 5-0 in the region, while Sandy Creek’s teams are 4-1 in the region.

CALLAWAY: Callaway’s boys’ and girls’ teams fell short in Monday’s road games against Bremen.

In the boys’ game, Bremen scored two goals in each half to claim a 4-0 victory.

In the girls’ game, region-leading Bremen surged past Callaway 9-1. Ashley Bowdon scored Callaway’s lone goal on a penalty kick.

Callaway will host Jordan on Friday.
