Eight Callaway High soccer players, four apiece from the boys’ and girls’ teams, were selected to the all-Region 5-AA team.

Those players helped Callaway’s teams enjoy successful seasons that ended with losses in the first round of the state tournament.

Among Callaway’s representatives on the team was senior Josh Cooprider, who was a standout goal keeper the past two seasons.

In Callaway’s final home game, a 2-0 win over Salem, Cooprider made some outstanding saves in the shutout.

Senior Tyler Lewis, Callaway’s leading scorer, also made the the all-region team, as did junior Joe Neese, who scored against Salem.

Senior Michael Everett also earned a spot on the all-region team.

Callaway finished fourth in the region before falling to Social Circle in the opening round of the state playoffs.

Among the all-region players for Callaway’s girls’ team was freshman Keeley McGuffin, who led the team in scoring.

Ashley Bowden, Shali Hackley and Alyssa Niner also earned a spot on the all-region team.

The only senior among that group is Hackley, who made a major contribution on a team made up almost entirely of new starters.

“She’s going to be missed,” Callaway coach Shonna Yawn said. “She helped guide and lead the team. She’s been a great influence for our players, especially with the new girls coming up.”

Callaway placed third in the region and fell to Oglethorpe County in the first round of the state playoffs.
