It’s soccer night at Callaway High.
A seven-on-seven boys’ soccer league that began earlier this month continues on Tuesday with a handful of games at Callaway High’s soccer complex.
The league will take a night off next week for the Georgia High School Association-mandated dead week before resuming on July 9.
There will be more games on July 16, leading up to a season-ending tournament on July 23.
It gives each of the teams, including the host Callaway Cavaliers, ample opportunity to get some valuable time together during the summer.
“It just gives us the chance to play a bunch,” said Mike Petite, Callaway’s head coach. “As a coach, you can’t ask for anything more. I don’t try to coach too much, just help with a couple of simple of things here and there.
While the league is for boys’ teams, the Callaway varsity girls’ team has been able to play some exhibition games before the first official games at 6 p.m.
Callaway’s varsity girls’ team has played the junior-varsity teams from Callaway and Central-Carroll.
“Hopefully we’ll continue with the 5:15 game with our JV boys against the girls,” Petite said. “Central had a young group of kids, and they played our girls. So that worked out well. That way we can give them a game every week.”
Petite has been pleased with the participation among his players so far.
“I’ve got about 11 that are showing up, which is good, plus my goal keeper (John Will White) is getting a lot of work,” Petite said. “He got three games (last week) because he plays with the JV team, as well as the varsity. So it’s good experience.”
