Callaway’s softball team shrugged off a slow start to overwhelm Shaw 18-8 on a steamy Monday afternoon.

Shaw, taking advantage of some Callaway defensive miscues, scored eight runs in the second inning to take an 8-5 lead.

Callaway regained control from there, and it scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the mercy rule into play and end the game.

Callaway (6-2), which has won five in a row, has two more home games this week.

Callaway hosts Hardaway on Tuesday, and Bowdon on Thursday.

In Monday’s game, Callaway had all sorts of issues during the difficult second inning, committing four errors that helped Shaw explode for eight runs.

After that, it was all Callaway.

“We started making some errors on routine plays,” Callaway head coach Robyn McCann said. “We went out there and talked about it, and said we weren’t going to do it anymore, and we got right back in it.”

Alora Vetsavong was one of the offensive leaders with a double and three walks.

Leaodff hitter Chaple Butler had a hit and two walks and two runs scored, and McKenzie Rhodes had a hit and a walk with three runs scored.

Kourtney Grier had a hit and two walks with an RBI, and Lindsay Cofield walked four times.

Mikayla Speer had a hit and two walks with an RBI, Aaliyah Morman hit a hit, a walk and an RBI, Tyterria Godwin had a walk and two runs scored, and Mya Lawton had an RBI.

Lawson and Alexus Furgerson both pitched for Callaway.
