Big region win for Callaway

The Callaway softball team went on the road and came away with a key 18-3 win over Jordan on Thursday.

Callaway (10-8 overall) improved to 2-3 in Region 5-AA and remained in fourth place, one game ahead of Jordan.

Considering only the top four teams in the region qualify for the region tournament, Thursday’s game was an important one for Callaway.

Callaway has region games remaining against Lamar County, Heard County and Jordan.

In Thursday’s game, Callaway broke it open with six runs in the third inning before exploding for nine more runs in the top of the fourth.

Alora Vetsavong had a monster day for Callaway with four hits, including two doubles and a triple, with two RBIs and four runs scored.

McKenzie Rhodes and Alexus Furgerson each had two hits and two RBIs, Chaple Butler had an RBI double and two walks, Lindsay Cofield had a walk and two runs scored, Leijorey Sanders reached base twice and scored a run, Lindsay Cofield scored two runs, Aaliyah Morman walked twice, and Tyterria Godwin scored a run.

Furgerson was the starting and winning pitcher.
