Callaway High’s volleyball team is hoping to make it a successful state journey.
Callaway, after finishing third in its area tournament, will participate in the Class A/AA state tournament on Saturday.
Callaway will play Johnson-Augusta on Saturday at noon, and the match will be played at Rabun County.
If Callaway beats Johnson, it will play again at 5 p.m. against the winner of a match between Armuchee and Rabun County.
If Callaway wins twice on Saturday, it would advance to the final eight of the state tournament.
It’s been a successful season for Callaway (12-12 overall), which finished the regular season with a 9-1 area record.
Callaway was the top seed in the area tournament, and it beat Jordan in its opening match to qualify for state.
Callaway finished third after losing to Central and Lamar County.
Callaway is led by a talented group of seniors who have helped Callaway’s program make huge strides the past few years.
“It’s sad to see them go,” said Precious White, Callaway’s second-year head coach. “It’s hard, because as you can tell, they’re every position. They’re both my setters, my libero. They’re at key positions, and I’m sorely going to miss them. This program’s going to miss them.”
The seniors are Abby Hammock, Katie Dupree, Cheney Eubanks, Emily Bokoko, Callie Shelton and Kassidy White.
“We grew up together, us six seniors,” Shelton said. “It’s really great to play with all of them, because we know each other. We work well together. We communicate very easily.”
