This is familiar territory for the Callaway Cavaliers.
In 2017 and 2018, Callaway’s football team headed into its game with Heard County with an opportunity to win the Region 5-AA championship.
Instead, it was Heard County getting the best of Callaway both years to claim the region crown.
Callaway will try to reverse recent history on Friday when it hosts Heard County with the region title once again on the line.
Callaway (7-1 overall) leads the region with a 4-0 record, while Heard County (3-4 overall) is 3-0 in the region.
In 2017, Heard County beat Callaway 35-28 on the way to the region title.
Last season, Heard County staged a late-game rally to beat Callaway 13-10, and it went on to not only claim the region title, but the state championship as well.
Four of the region’s seven teams will qualify for the state playoffs, and those four teams appear to be pretty well settled.
While Callaway and Heard County are unbeaten in the region, Bremen and Lamar County are tied for third place at 2-1.
Temple is on the outskirts of the playoff race with a 1-3 region record, and Spencer (0-3) and Jordan (0-4) are winless in the region.
Here are the region standings, as well as this week’s games.
