Big third quarter powers LaGrange

A furious stretch of basketball in the third quarter propelled the LaGrange Lady Grangers to a 46-37 win over visiting Hampton on Tuesday.

When the two teams came out of the halftime break, the game was tied 20-20, but LaGrange busted the game open with a 15-0 run in the third quarter.

Hampton, which trailed by as a many as 17 points late in the third quarter, made things interesting and got within six midway through the final quarter, but the day belonged to LaGrange, which evened its record at 3-3.

Kamelah Kelley led LaGrange with 12 points, Chaquave’ayr Robinson added 13 points, and

Corriah Williams scored 11 points.

After a back-and-forth first two quarters, the two teams headed to the halftime break in a 20-20 game.

Kelley knocked down a 3-pointer early in the third quarter to give LaGrange a 23-20 lead, and that’s the way it remained for nearly three minutes.

Beginning with a Robinson fast-break basket with 4:36 left in the third quarter, the onslaught was on.

In a span of four minutes, LaGrange scored 15 consecutive points, turning a tight game into a blowout.

Williams, a freshman guard, made a pair of 3-pointers during the run, and Robinson scored the other nine points.

Robinson capped the run with a three-point play, giving LaGrange a 35-20 lead with 3:37 to play in the third quarter.

Another Williams 3-pointer pushed the lead to 40-23, and it was a 42-27 game heading to the final quarter.

LaGrange went cold offensively in the fourth quarter, and Hampton got within six with four minutes to play before Williams made a jump shot to extend the lead to eight.

LaGrange led by at least seven points the rest of the way.

LaGrange will host Harris County on Tuesday.
