Skaters from the Columbus Figure Skating Academy spun, leaped and impressed visitors at Sweetland on Ice on Monday with a special demonstration at the amphitheater.
The skaters plan to return to the ring for another demonstration on Saturday, before the start of learn to skate classes at Sweetland.
“Jan. 4 through Feb. 15 — which is a Saturday — every Saturday at 11 o’clock, right here [at Sweetland Amphitheatre] will be a learn to skate class,” said William Fields, the president of the Columbus Figure Skating Academy. “Anyone and everyone who wants to learn how to skate can learn the basics in six weeks.”
William Fields said that the class will be open to everyone ages 3 and up, including adults, and he said skating has provided a great outlet for his own family.
“I can’t speak for all the kids, but I know for my daughter, she just likes to get out there, and she can be herself,” Fields said. “She’s done gymnastics, t-ball, baseball — all the quote, unquote normal sports — but now, for the last six years, it is what she loves. It’s her outlet in life, so she goes and just does her thing. She loves it.”
The demonstration on Tuesday was a chance for the skaters to share that love of skating. Sarah Hale, who has been skating with the academy for two years, said that she enjoys inspiring “the little ones” with her skating.
“I’m excited because we are doing a learn to skate thing this year, and whenever we’re skating, they are challenged to want to try it,” said Ashley Fields, who has been skating for six years.
The Columbus Figure Skating Academy skaters are scheduled to return for demonstrations on Dec. 28 at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. To sign up, contact info@columbusfigureskating.com by Jan. 3.
Learn to skate classes will take place at Sweetland Amphitheatre on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to noon beginning on Jan. 4. There is limited space in the classes.
