Callaway High’s wrestling team went 1-1 on the opening day of the Class AA state duals in Macon.

Callaway opened with a 46-30 victory over Dodge County before losing its next match to Social Circle 66-16.

Callaway wrestles again on Friday morning against Jeff Davis as it looks to fight through the loser’s bracket and earn a place on the awards podium.

While Callaway can’t win the state title, it can still finish as high as third.

This is the second consecutive season Callaway has won at least one match at state.

In Friday’s first match, it was all Callaway, which won nine of the 14 matches.

Winners for Callaway included Cameron Breed, Desmond Nunley, Laddarius Williams, Colton Clines, Ethan Mill, LaQuize Gilbert, Daniel Shuman and Anthony Elliott.

Izaiyah Gray won by forfeit for the Cavaliers.

Facing a strong Social Circle team in the second round, Callaway came up short.

Callaway’s wins came from Elliott, Williams and Gilbert.

Social Circle won 11 of the 14 matches.
