The Callaway Cavaliers have opened their season with a game against the Opelika Bulldogs the past two seasons, and those teams will kick things off once again this year.
Callaway and Opelika will begin the 2020 season with a showdown at Callaway Stadium on Aug. 21.
In the first meeting in 2018, Callaway got a monster game from running back Cartavious “Tank” Bigsby on the way to a 35-21 victory.
Bigsby, who is now a freshman running back at Auburn, ran for 249 yards with three touchdowns as Callaway pulled away late for the win.
A year ago points were hard to come by, with Opelika holding on late for a 10-7 victory at home. Callaway won 12 straight games after that before losing to Brooks County in the state semifinals.
Callaway, which only has nine regular-season games on the schedule, will play five games before opening Region 5-AA play on Oct. 9 at Haralson County.
Callaway will be a part of a new-look region that includes Haralson County, Bremen, Temple and Heard County.
Callaway closes the regular season against rival Heard County on Nov. 6 at Callaway Stadium.
Callaway won the Region 5-AA championship last season on the way to an appearance in the state semifinals.
Callaway has a preseason game at Darlington School on Aug. 14 before opening the regular season the following week.
Here is Callaway’s 2020 schedule:
