Tommy Callaway is running for the district 5 seat on the Troup County School Board.

Callaway is a lifelong resident of LaGrange. He attended LaGrange city schools and graduated from LaGrange College with a business degree. He had a 30-year career as an industrial engineer with Milliken and Company. Upon leaving Milliken and Company, Callaway accepted a plant manager’s position at Inflation Systems. At both companies, he was responsible for reducing costs, finding more economical ways of producing products, improving employee morale, assisting with developing budgets and performing within those budgets.

Callaway’s campaign platform includes the following focuses:

4-Discipline: Callaway said he will work to put discipline back in the classrooms. School administrators will be charged with and held accountable for controlling discipline. He said unruly students will be removed from the classroom so teachers can teach and students can learn.

“This is my number one priority,” Callaway said. “This will reduce stress on our teachers, improve their morale and result in improved student achievement.”

-Supporting Teachers: Callaway said he will work with fellow board members to develop an ‘Open Door’ policy for every teacher. Teachers will also be provided with the supplies and books needed for instruction. He said teacher and paraprofessional turnover will receive more scrutiny to reduce turnover.

-Educational Excellence: Callaway said reading should be taught using phonics. He believes the school system must return to the basics of learning to read and learning math, science, geography and true history.

-Fiscal Responsibility: Callaway said the administration will be held accountable for reducing and controlling costs within board-approved budgets. Board members must fully understand every line item, make sure it is needed and ensure it is properly funded.

-Tax Relief: Callaway said he will support tax relief for senior citizens.
