The members of Troup High’s ultra-successful girls’ basketball team will receive a keepsake to recognize a memorable season.

During the 2019-2020 season, Troup went 27-2 and reached the Class AAAA state-championship game before losing to Americus-Sumter.

In honor of that accomplishment, every member of the team will receive a necklace with a Troup logo and a personalized message.

Troup head coach Carla Thornton is appreciative of everyone who helped make sure the money would be there to pay for the necklaces.

The players, coaches, and team managers will each get a necklace.

“We had some people come together with the funds, so that was a huge blessing,” Thornton said. “I shed some tears.”

Thornton said the necklaces will be “customized.”

“I like for them to be special, so I’m getting their name and number on the back,” she said.

It was a spectacular season for Troup, which went unbeaten in the regular season and didn’t lose until it fell to Sandy Creek in the Region 5-AAAA championship game.

Troup then won four games in the state tournament to earn a shot at the championship, and it lost to Americus-Sumter 66-52 in the title game.

“It was an amazing season,” Thornton said. “We only lost twice. You hate that the two games you lost were championship games, but things happen. It was just so special.”

With most of the key players set to return for the 2020-2021 season, Troup appears well-positioned to make another championship run, and possibly win it all this time.

“It’s something to shoot for,” Thornton said.
