DQ Wilkerson had worked hard, preparing himself for a season that was full of promise.
Wilkerson, a Callaway High graduate, played in four games during his first season at Mercer University in 2018, and he was looking forward to taking on an expanded role as a red-shirt freshman.
Unfortunately for Wilkerson, his hopes were derailed when he suffered a fractured patella, a serious injury to the knee.
The mishap came during the first week of preseason practice in August of 2019, and when Wilkerson found out the extent of the injury, he knew his season was done before it had even started.
“At that time, I was just questioning myself, asking why. Why did this happen?,” Wilkerson said. “I was down about it. I missed the whole season, and I was out there watching everybody play, watching everybody practice. I couldn’t do anything. I knew the season was over. I just couldn’t wait to get back to doing what I love to do the most.”
For Wilkerson, the wait will hopefully end on Sept. 5 when Mercer is scheduled
