In a rematch of last year’s GISA state-championship series, LaGrange Academy’s softball team overwhelmed Flint River Academy 8-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
LaGrange Academy (5-1) surged to an early lead with five first-inning runs, and Flint River was unable to make up that deficit against pitcher Amber Corley, who had it working.
The senior pitcher tossed a seven-inning complete game, and 15 of the 21 outs she recorded were by strikeouts.
Corley also got it done at the plate with three hits, including a double, and she had one RBI.
Carolyn Lehman, LaGrange Academy’s catcher, had three hits of her own with a triple, and she had three RBIs.
Natalee Waddell had a hit and two RBIs, Mackenzie Jones had two hits, Morgan Bartlett and Kayla McBride each had a hit and an RBI, and Kelsey Cotton and Lanie Lackey each had one hit.
LaGrange Academy took control with five runs in its first at-bat.
Corley drove in inning’s first run with a double, and Lehman’s triple drove in two runs and put LaGrange Academy on top 3-0.
Waddell drove in another run with a groundout, and Bartlett capped the rally with an RBI single.
The Lady Warriors extended their lead to 6-0 with a run in the bottom of the third, with McBride’s bunt driving in Jones, who reached on a single.
LaGrange Academy capped its scoring with two runs in the sixth inning, with Lehman and Waddell coming through with back-to-back RBI singles.
