Local service organization LaGrange Lions Club is handing out boxes of free produce on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Shuford Softball Complex.
The event, called “Truck to Trunk,” will provide free produce to anyone, with a limit of one box
per vehicle. It will start at 11 a.m. and go until 5 p.m., or until all food is distributed.
Those attending are asked to enter from Calumet Center Road, wear a mask and stay in their car.
The giveaway is the second the club has done this year, said Allen Smith of the Lions Club. The club is partnering with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which bought the food from Collins Brothers Produce of Forest Park, Georgia. The giveaway is part of the USDA’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, where the government purchases food from financially distressed farmers and distributes it to people through local nonprofits.
Nearly 2,000 boxes of fresh produce will be available. Smith said there will be a variety of foods, but they don’t know what exactly is in the boxes until they’re received. The contents depend on what is in season — the boxes received for the last giveaway, in June, had potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and three different types of squash, Smith said.
