Lafayette Christian opens season

The Lafayette Christian School basketball teams jumped into a new season on Thursday against visiting Springwood School.

In the girls’ game, Springwood hit a shot at the buzzer to tie it at the close of regulation before winning 43-38 in overtime.

The Lady Cougars started quickly and had a 12-5 lead after the first quarter, and they were ahead 24-12 at halftime.

By the close of the third quarter Lafayette Christian’s lead was down to 29-23, and Springwood tied it in the fourth quarter before winning in overtime.

Savanna Bryant led Lafayette Christian in scoring with 12 points, and she made two 3-pointers, both in the second quarter.

Estela Llorens added 10 points for Lafayette Christian, and she did all of her scoring in the first half.

Juleigh Haynes added six points, and Hana Stevens and Carmen Bridges scored five points apiece.

Lafayette Christian was ahead with less than two seconds remaining when Springwood’s Emily Jo Matthews made a free throw to tie it and send the game to overtime.

Springwood dominated the four-minute overtime period to secure the road win.

In Thursday’s boys’ game, Springwood led by 11 points at the half, and it pulled away in the final two quarters for the 77-46 win.

AJ Parks led the Cougars with 15 points, and six of those points came in the first quarter.

Chaz Clark added eight points for Lafayette Christian, and Tre Franklin made two 3-pointers and scored six points.

Baylor Miles added six points, and Grant Gedney scored five points.

Leading by 11 points at the half, Springwood put it away by outscoring Lafayette Christian 32-7 in the third quarter.
