Callaway’s comeback falls short

NEWNAN – The Callaway Lady Cavaliers staged a fourth-quarter comeback to give themselves a chance, but it was home-standing Newnan hanging on for a 52-51 victory on Tuesday night.

Trailing 45-39, Callaway (3-2) rallied to take the lead, but Newnan hit a late shot to secure the one-point win.

Gabrielle Johnson, Callaway’s junior point guard, scored 18 points, and she was 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Jazmine Thornton also scored 18 points for Callaway, and she helped lead the fourth-quarter comeback with two 3-pointers.

Lacy Thomas added six points, all in the first half, and Camryn Stargell scored five points.

The Lady Cavaliers trailed 14-7 after the first quarter, and they fought back in the second quarter to cut their deficit to 27-26.

Newnan was ahead by six points through three quarters, and it held off a hard-charging Callaway team to earn the win.

In the boys’ game, it was all Newnan, which beat Callaway 74-44.

Newnan led 15-10 after the first quarter, 33-21 at the half, and 52-32 through three quarters.
