The Callaway Cavaliers were unable to keep pace with a strong East Coweta team on Saturday evening.

East Coweta (14-7) started quickly and scored 47 points in the first half, and it withstood a second-half charge from Callaway to capture an 80-66 victory.

The good news for the Cavaliers is that they remained perfect in Region 5-AA with a 4-0 record.

Callaway, after hosting Lanett on Tuesday, will return to region competition on Friday with a game at Temple.

Callaway opened its region schedule with a 55-48 win over Temple, and it followed that up with wins over Haralson County, Heard County and Bremen to reach the halfway point of its region schedule in first place.

In Saturday’s game, the Cavaliers were down 25-14 after the first quarter, and they trailed 47-27 at the half.

The Cavaliers fought back and outscored the Indians 23-15 in the third quarter to get within 12, and they stayed within shouting distance in the fourth quarter but couldn’t make up the deficit.

Cameron Smith and Demetrius Coleman each scored 13 points to lead a balanced Callaway scoring effort.

Carlos Billingslea added eight points, all in the second half, Kaleb Salter scored seven points, and Devin Dowell and Jimmie Dukes had six points apiece.
