Callaway High’s soccer teams opened the season with home losses to Douglas County on Thursday.

In the girls’ game, which started nearly an hour late because Douglas County was a late arrival, Callaway lost 9-0.

In the boys’ game, Douglas County scored four second-half goals to beat Callaway 4-0.

It was the first of eight non-region games for Callaway before the start of Region 5-AA play on March 2 against Bremen.

While the girls’ game was controlled by Douglas County from the get-go, the boys’ game was competitive until the final 30 minutes.

Douglas County scored a goal with a little more than 30 minutes to play, and it added two more goals in the next eight minutes to build an 8-0 lead.

Douglas County capped the scoring with a goal with 2:32 remaining.

“We played well against a solid Class AAAAAA school,” said Callaway head coach Mike Petite. “It’s all about getting better and I think we did that tonight.”

Callaway’s teams will be back in action on Friday at Crawford County, and they have road games against Dutchtown and Bowdon next week.
