Callaway’s LaQuize Gilbert capped a spectacular high-school wrestling career with a second-place finish at the state finals in Macon on Wednesday.

Gilbert won four matches on Tuesday to advance to the Class AA state-championship match in the 170-pound division.

Gilbert’s opponent in the finals was someone he knew well.

Gilbert lost to Bremen’s Ty Morris in the championship match at the area tournament, and they squared off again less than a week later with a state title on the line, and it was Morris earning the 7-1 victory.

After beating Berrien County’s Jeremy Exum, Toombs County’s Chandler Lynn and Banks County’s Roman Haynes, Gilbert outlasted Elbert County’s Trez White 2-1 to earn a title shot.

Gilbert finished second in the state for the second straight season, and he placed fourth at state as a sophomore.

Gilbert is also a standout in football, and he was the leading tackler for a Callaway team that won the Class AA state championship in December.

Gilbert was joined at the state finals by 11 of his teammates, and six of them won at least one match.

In the 285-pound weight class, Jacob Miles finished with a 5-2 record before falling in the consolation semifinals.

After losing his first match, Miles won four in a row before losing to Elbert County’s Khrystian Anderson.

At 195 pounds, Alan Shuman lost his first match before winning four in a row, and his tournament ended with a 4-3 loss to Fannin County’s Matthew Crowder in the consolation round.

LaDarrious Williams (132 pounds), a state placer last season, went 4-2 in the state finals, and he lost to Elbert County’s Irbin Olmos in the consolation semifinals.

JoJo Shuman posted a 3-2 record at 220 pounds, and he fell to Dade County’s Austin Sorrelle 8-5 in the consolation round.

Isaiah Shoemake (138 pounds) had a 3-2 record, and he lost a hard-fought 2-1 decision to George Hernandez of Jeff Davis in the consolation round.

Colton Cline (160 pounds) had a 2-2 record in the finals, and his state stay ended with a loss to Model’s Kalan Woods.

Callaway’s other state participants were Tyrus Edwards (106 pounds), Octavious Colton (113 pounds), Troy Helton (152 pounds) and Ethan Mill (182 pounds).
