The Troup County School System continues to work on plans for its vacant school properties.

Just one month after donating the Whitesville Road Elementary School property to the county, the school system is now considering an auction for the Mountville Elementary School property. Mountville closed in 2015 and has housed furniture and other leftover items since then, according to Superintendent Brian Shumate.

“We want somebody to take it and do something good with it, and make it a community place like it was. It’s doing no one good just sitting there,” Shumate said.

At Monday night’s work session, Shumate proposed a contract with The Auction Way and Remax Results LaGrange to hold a public auction on June 19 at Mountville Elementary. The auction would include selling all of the surplus furniture, equipment, vehicles and buses, as well as the property itself. Shumate said leftover items from Whitesville Road Elementary School will also be sold at the auction.

According to the contract, TCSS will initially pay $20,910, plus 10 percent of sales.

The Auction Way will stage each room, setting it up for the auction.

“We will auction each room off,” said Assistant Superintendent Chip Medders. “If a person bids on room one, they will actually win the bid for room one and all of the contents of room one.”

Shumate said TCSS has kept the utilities on and insurance on the property, so selling it would eliminate those costs for the school system.

“It does us no good to have surplus property sitting around. It’s not doing us any good, and we are still keeping the utilities running and insurance and all of those things. We have liability there that we just don’t need,” Shumate said. “We’d rather put it in somebody else’s hands that can do something with it.”

Last month, TCSS voted to donate the Whitesville Road Elementary School to the county so that a soccer complex can be constructed.

The Troup County School Board will vote on the auction proposal for Mountville Elementary School during Thursday night’s meeting.
