The LaGrange Youth Council is seeking new members for the upcoming school year.

LYC is an advisory board made up of local students who have an interest in making a difference in the community and have a desire to learn more about the functions of their local government.

“It’s partly a service project,” said Adam Speas, media coordinator for the city of LaGrange. “They’ll get some leadership skills and help the community around them. We try to make it as student-run as possible and try to run it like a council meeting … but it’s also more laid back than a council meeting.”

LYC is open to students living in the LaGrange city limits, though not necessarily attending school in LaGrange. Participants must also be a rising junior or senior in high school, Speas said.

The council meets once a month during the school year, and adopts issues that matter to them as projects for community service. Students will need to attend at least one city council meeting throughout their time on the council as well as at least one litter pick up through Leaving LaGrange Better Than We Found It.

Each year, LYC dedicates themselves to projects designed to help the community.

Some projects include reading books to younger kids to promote youth literacy and promoting mental health awareness. Through these types of projects, students collaborate with organizations in the community like the United Way of West Georgia and The Veal Group.

The council consists of students from various schools from all over LaGrange, including LaGrange High School, Troup County High School, LaGrange Academy, Callaway High School, Springwood School in Alabama, Lafayette Christian School, Sound Doctrine Deliverance Ministries International, and home school.

For students who plan to attend college, it’s a major resume booster.

“They can get some experiences that some colleges may see as a benefit,” Speas said.

Applications are due Friday, Aug. 27.
