Callaway spotted Heard County a three-touchdown lead Friday night, but the Cavaliers rallied back for a stunning 24-21 victory in both teams’ regular-season finale.

Blake Eubanks kicked a 30-yard game-winning field goal with just over four minutes left as Callaway took the lead for good. It was the second time this year Eubanks kicked a game-winner for Callaway. He also did so in the opener against Opelika.

The Braves had a quick 21-0 lead in the first half before the Cavaliers started their rally. The final Heard County score came after the Braves recovered a kickoff, setting them up to add to their advantage.

Callaway’s comeback started when Qua Whitfield scored on a 20-yard touchdown run down the sidelines with 4:05 left in the second quarter.

The next two Cavaliers scores were DeShun Coleman passes to Carlos Billingslea. The first was a 25-yard pass with 8:26 left in the third quarter to pull within 21-14.

The second touchdown connection came after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Callaway had forced the Cavaliers in second and long. On the scoring play, Billingslea broke wide open up a screen pass and ran 30 yards for the game-tying touchdown with 2:36 left in the third quarter.

After stopping the Braves, Callaway drove down the field and set up Eubanks’ field goal.

Heard County responded with its best drive of the second half, driving inside the Callaway 30. However, a final fourth-down pass was long in the corner of the end zone, giving the Cavaliers the victory.

The win secured the second spot in the class AA, region 5 standings for Callaway, meaning the Cavaliers will host a playoff game next week.
