1949-2021

Raymond Lewis Sewell, 72, of Lithonia, Georgia passed away on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021.

Raymond Lewis Sewell was born on May 7, 1949, in Hogansville, Georgia to the late Mr. Herman and Mrs. Catherine Sewell.

He started high school at West End High School and then graduated from Hogansville High School as one of the first African Americans to integrate and desegregate the school in 1967.   Raymond went on to earn a certificate from an Atlanta area Technical School and for a brief period, worked as an orderly at Newnan Hospital in Newnan, Georgia.  He then went on to continue his 34 year career at General Motors as an Assembly Line worker.

Raymond enjoyed fishing with his dad, riding his motorcycle, gardening, woodworking, and having family barbecues.  With the skills that he learned from his dad, he tilled and cultivated a huge vegetable garden every year that not only benefited his family but the surrounding community as well.  One of the most daring things Raymond did was build a 50-foot CB radio tower in the backyard of his Elm Street home with the help of his brothers-in-law.

Raymond leaves to cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife of fifty-three years, Pastor Annie Laura Sewell; a son, Lorenzo Keith Sewell (Liane); two daughters, Valarie Sewell and Angela Murphy (Ricardo); grandchildren, Ricardo Jr., Darius, Joshua, Jaelin, Nicholas, Davion and Davianna; sisters, Jacqueline Sewell, Emily Sewell, Linda Thornton (Douglas), Wanda Levette and Mavis Sewell; four brothers-in-law, Charles C. Sims (Judy), Charles W. Sims (Renea), Broderick Sims (Sandra) and Stanley Sims (Jacquelin); sisters-in-law,  Marjorie Sims, Pastor Sharon Goseer (Tony), and Mary Ware; nephews, Daryl (WilAnn), Tony (Lin), Craig (Leslie), Demetrius (Angela), Pastor Reginald Sims (Tracy), Anthony (Linette), Charles, Jr., Charles Goseer (Dejanique), and Steve (Tomeka); nieces,  Cathy, Lena, Andrea, Sasha, Breanna, Jade (Patrick), Jere (Ondre), Chanea, Charlisa, LaToya (Kregory) and LeAnntoinette; a host of cousins, uncles, aunts and friends.

Loved ones that cleared the path for Raymond are his loving parents, Herman and Catherine Sewell; sisters, Phyllis Clements, Everlyn Sewell, Janice Walyun and Vickie Sims and brothers-in-law, Gregory Levette and Leonard Ware.

Visitation for Raymond will be held on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, from 4-7 p.m. at Horis A. Ward Funeral Home – Fairview Chapel, 376 Fairview Road, Stockbridge, Georgia, 30281. A Celebration of Life will occur on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021 at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will immediately follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
