OUR VIEW: Unthinkable tragedy in Grantville

An unthinkable tragedy happened in Grantville over the weekend, when Tommy, Evelyn and Luke Hawk were killed at their small business, the Lock Stock and Barrell Shooting Range.

The Hawks have been described by many as a loving Christian couple. For some unknown reason, someone walked in Friday night, killed the three of them and stole approximately 40 firearms from the property.

The Grantville Police Department and Georgia Bureau of Investigations are researching what happened and asking for the public’s help in developing suspects.

These kinds of things don’t happen in Grantville. They shouldn’t happen anywhere.

Luke, 18, was home on Spring break and was getting ready to graduate, according to various media reports. He was at the range helping his grandparents with the small business, which apparently had no other employees.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the city of Grantville and the National Shooting Sports Foundation are offering a $15,000 reward, and Gov. Brian Kemp announced another $10,000 is being added to that award by executive order.

A GoFundMe to support the family has already raised over $18,000 at the time of this writing, well over the goal of $15,000. We’re sure that money will be a big help to a family going through a terrible tragedy, and we urge anyone with the means to do so to help.

We also encourage anyone with information about this incident to come forward. Someone has murdered three completely innocent people, stolen over 40 firearms and drove away. We know law enforcement is working hard to solve this case, but our police officers can only work with the information they have.

If you think of anything that might be useful to the investigation, call the GBI tip line at 1-800-597-TIPS, the region 2 office at (706) 565-7888 or the ATF tip line at 1-800-ATF-TIPS.
