A 16-year-old student at the Troup County Career Center brought a handgun to school Tuesday and had several rounds of ammunition in their bookbag, according to a press release from the school system.

An investigation is underway by law enforcement and TCCC administration with assistance from the Troup County School System’s school safety coordinator Steve Heaton. TCSS said proper disciplinary protocol will be followed.

According to an email from the school, administrators were made aware that a student may have brought a gun to campus and law enforcement was notified. The student was searched and the handgun and ammunition were discovered.

“We would like to thank our administrators, staff and law enforcement for addressing this situation quickly, thoroughly and responsibly as possible,” TCSS said in a press release. “This is a good reminder that weapons of any kind or toys that look like weapons are not allowed on school grounds in the Troup County School System. Please encourage your student to report to a teacher or administration when they see or hear anything of concern.”
