Mancel Lawson Newman, Jr., known to all as Jack, passed away on Sunday, May 22 and has gone to Heaven to be with his wife Marie. Though he lived in Lagrange for the last six years, he grew up in West Georgia and spent most of his adult life in the Athens area.

Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was proud to have served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne in Korea.

Jack, though retired many years, was and educator and administrator at Athens Technical College. He was involved with the Georgia Vocational Association and served as its President. He also served the American Vocational Association. After retirement, Jack became involved with the Help Your Neighbor Society (HYNS) working to help families in need in the Athens area.

Jack always enjoyed tinkering with things and working with wood. He also enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors.

Jack is survived by his daughter Judith Newman, a son, Chuck Newman (Kathy) and his sister Delree Friant along with her daughter Annette Friant. He was blessed to have several nieces and nephews, along with eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

There will be a graveside service at the Powder Springs City Cemetery in Powder Springs Georgia., where he will be laid to rest next to Marie on Tuesday, May 31, at 11 a.m.
