This time of year — especially during holiday weeks — is a time where a lot of people go on vacation.

It’s almost human nature — one somehow built in the relatively short social media age — to want to post all of our vacation photos on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok or whatever the kids are using these days. All of us spend so much time dreaming of those days, that short time alone, that we want to post where we are.

But it’s also not very smart to do that.

If you post you are hundreds, if not thousands of miles, away from home at a tropical destination or in the mountains, that means everyone knows you’re away from home. Yes, your friends and family might be jealous, but people who aren’t your friend also might see this information.

And criminals are always looking for an easy crime. It’s why unlocked cars get stolen a lot more than locked cars. They are an easy target.

Your home, if people know you aren’t home, is an easy target, especially if you just posted in the last few minutes about a dinner photo from a fancy restaurant hundreds of miles away.

You can still post those vacation photos. Just wait until you get home to do so.

Also, if you are going out of town, the LaGrange Police Department and Troup County Sheriff’s Office will drive by your house and check everything out while you’re gone. Just call their main number.

Take precautions if you’re going out of town, but start by telling everyone in your travel group to wait until they get home to post those vacation photos.
