A man who was shot during a domestic incident is now facing charges after police say the shooting was in self-defense.

Charles Anthony Shields, of LaGrange, was charged with several domestic violence offenses stemming from an incident where he was shot over the weekend.

The LaGrange Police Department began investigating the incident Friday night around 9:30 p.m. when it received reports that a person had been shot in the 100 block of Loch Court.

Officers arrived to find Shields suffered a single gunshot wound to his upper torso, and he was immediately transported to an undisclosed emergency trauma center.

LPD said the subsequent investigation revealed that Shields had assaulted his wife, and she shot him in self-defense.

The victim told police that she and Shields had been arguing earlier in the night, and he became upset that she was ignoring him while she was using her phone. She said Shields then snatched her phone and threw it at a television, damaging it. When she went to retrieve the phone, Shields assumed she was going to call 911, so he charged at her and began striking her multiple times as she begged him to get off her and leave.

The victim advised that they continued to tussle and Shields prevented her from using the phone to call for help. The victim said when Shields refused to get off her, she reached for her pistol and shot once, missing her husband. The two then began to struggle over the gun and Shields was shot, according to the LPD press release.

After Shields was shot, his wife was able to retrieve the phone as she fled the location and she called 911.

According to police investigators, the victim was bloodied as a result of the physical assault with visible injuries to her face, arms, chest and hands.

As a result of the investigation, Shields was charged with family violence warrants for aggravated assault, strong arm robbery, false imprisonment, criminal damage to property and obstructing or hindering persons making an emergency telephone call.

At the time of the incident, Shields already had a warrant for his arrest for failure to appear and probation violation warrants out of Clayton County and Fulton County.

No charges were made against the female victim.
