First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange will host a free mental health first aid training course to help educate community members to assist others in mental health crisis.
The one-day mental health first aid class being taught by WellStar Health System at no charge to the public. The training was developed though the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. The skills-based training course teaches participants about mental health and substance-use issues.
The program will cover common signs and symptoms of mental illness and substance use, how to interact with persons in crisis and how to connect with them to help. The class will also provide education on trauma, addiction and self-care.
The program teaches the ALGEE action plan, which instructs how to approach, assess and assist with persons in crisis, give them reassurance and support, and encourage them to both seek professional help and practice self-care.
The class is available to anyone, but employers, law enforcement, medical staff, faith leaders, and concerned community members are encouraged to take the class.
The course will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 120 Broad St. in LaGrange on Tuesday, Sept. 13 from 12 to 5:30 p.m.
Because space is limited, participants are required to sign up online by Aug. 31. Participants are also asked to complete a two-hour, self-paced online course prior to the class.
