LaGrange Police are still investigating an incident where a small child was accidentally shot over the weekend.
On Saturday, around 1:10 p.m., officers with the LaGrange Police Department were called to the Lee’s Crossing Apartment Homes on Old Airport Rd. in reference to reports that a 2-year-old had been shot.
Police later confirmed that a two-year-old boy had been shot in the buttocks, according to the police report. The child was then transported to Egleston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta for treatment. The child is currently in stable condition, according to LaGrange Police Sgt. Brian Brown.
Shortly after arrival, officers determined that the child had been accidentally shot by an older child who lived in the home.
According to the report, the victim’s mother told officers she had been on the phone when she heard what sounded like a gunshot. She told police she heard the two-year-old crying afterwards, but initially thought it was just due to the loud noise. Upon checking on the child, she discovered he had been shot.
The mother told police that the gun belonged to the child’s father, and it had been in a case behind the couch where her older son found it. The age of the older child has not been released.
Police say the mother denied knowing the gun was there and she thought the child’s father had taken it with him.
This incident is still under active investigation by the LaGrange Police Department Criminal Investigation Section. Police say charges, if any, have yet to be determined.
