LaGrange police are investigating an incident where a man is accused of trying to run over a woman and a police officer during a domestic incident Friday afternoon.

Warrants have been issued for the arrest of Rickey Lamar McFarland as a result of the alleged attempted vehicular assault.

On Friday, Oct. 14, around 4:24 p.m., LPD Officer Julie Mecham was on patrol in the area of N. Dawson Street when she encountered what appeared to be a rolling domestic incident.

Police say a vehicle passed the officer with the rear passenger door open and a woman screaming for help from inside. When Officer Meacham started to perform a traffic stop, the vehicle stopped in a driveway in the 200 block of Davis St. before the stop.

The officer then requested the woman who had just asked for help to exit the vehicle and relocate to the front of the patrol car.

According to police, before the officer could question the driver, McFarland put the car in reverse and tried to run both the officers and the woman over. The woman then got back into the vehicle, which then fled the area.

Officers indicated that the woman was not forced back into the vehicle before it fled the scene.

“She opened up the door and got back into the vehicle on her own,” LPD Lt. Mark Cavender said.

The incident does not appear to be a setup, he said. “[The officer] appeared to just have happened up on a domestic incident,” Cavender said.

Police were later able to identify the driver as McFarland. Warrants have since been issued for his arrest for aggravated assault on a peace officer and felony obstruction of officers.

The female victim has not been identified at this time.

Cavender said the suspect nearly struck both the officer and the unknown woman. No injuries were reported. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the LaGrange Police Department at (706) 883-2603 or Troup County Crime Stoppers at (706) 812-1000.
