The Troup County Board of Elections and Registration will vote on the possibility adding a voting day on Saturday, Nov. 26 at an emergency meeting on Tuesday at 9 a.m.

The idea only became possible after Fulton County Superior Court Judge Thomas Cox issued an order Friday that would allow Saturday voting for the upcoming run-off. Georgia state law currently does not allow Saturday voting on a weekend after a Thursday or Friday holiday, meaning there would be no early voting on a weekend day during the upcoming run-off.  Both Thursday (Thanksgiving) and Friday (designated as a state holiday) are both holidays in Georgia.

“Now that the court is saying yes, you can do Saturday, I think it’s worth the discussion,” said Elections Board Chairman Bill Stump of the idea of Saturday voting in Troup County.

The board of elections voted against the idea of holding early voting on Sunday, Nov. 27 during a meeting last week. At that time, holding early voting on Saturday, Nov. 26 wasn’t even a discussion due to the state law.  Now that decision is up to each county.

The state of Georgia appealed the decision Monday. It was unclear how fast the appeal might be heard and what that might mean.

Stump said regardless of the Troup County board’s decision on Saturday voting, there are options for people who can’t get to the polls on election day. He said anyone is welcome to cast an absentee ballot. However, he said the board will certainly discuss adding Saturday voting at Tuesday’s meeting.

“There’s a short period of time, and if Saturday helps that, I’m certainly willing to talk about it,” Stump said.

The upcoming run-off election will be held Tuesday, Dec. 6 with early voting taking place Nov. 28-Dec. 2. It’ll include the senate race between incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker, as well as the local District 2 city council race between Leon Childs and Quay Boddie.
