LaGrange Police Department recognizes nine officers for quick actions to save a life

During the LaGrange City Council meeting on Dec. 12, the city recognized nine LaGrange police officers who helped save a life.
Since 2016, public safety agencies in Troup County have partnered with the LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce to recognize countywide public safety officials that help save a life through their Valor Awards.
The Life Saving Award is only given to one officer, one public safety official, for all the jurisdictions, said LaGrange Police Chief Lou Dekmar.
“We believe that the significance of recognizing officers that embrace not only their training but duty that results in the saving of a life should be recognized,” Dekmar said.
With the help of Mayor Pro-tem Willie Edmondson, Dekmar presented Life Saving Awards to some of those officers who helped save a life.
Awards were given to nine officers for saving a life from 2016 to 2019, some of whom received multiple awards:
4On Feb. 2, 2016, Cpl. William Jones administered Narcan to an unresponsive male who was later transported to West Georgia Medical Center (WGMC), where he made a full recovery.
4On May 30, 2016, Officer Brent Storey and Officer Josh Knowles performed CPR on an unresponsive male, the patient was transported to WGMC where he made a full recovery.
4On June 5, 2016, Det. Stephen Spivey, Cpl. Mike Barton and Cpl. Storey utilized an AED and perform CPR on an unresponsive patient. The patient was transported to WGMC where he made a full recovery. On Mar. 17, 2017, Cpl. Erik Vaughn applied a tourniquet to a victim with severe leg injuries. The patient was transported to an area hospital where he survived his injuries.
4 On July 20, 2017, Officer Unricky Parks administered CPR on an unresponsive child. The child was transported to WGMC for treatment where he made a full recovery.
4 On July 21, 2018, Cpl. Jones perform CPR on an unresponsive person until emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene. The patient was transported to WGMC where he made a full recovery.
4 On Aug. 3, 2018, Officer Joshua Clower and Cpl. Mike Barton respond to an address in the county about a person shot in the pelvic area. When a tourniquet was not sufficient to stop the bleeding, the officers applied QuickClot directly to the wound. This helped control the bleeding until the victim could be flown to an Atlanta area hospital where he made a full recovery.
4 On Dec. 19, 2018, Cpl. Vaughn administered CPR to a male who had attempted to commit suicide. The male was transported to WGMC where he made a full recovery.
Capt. Robert Kirby helped present the awards saying, the LaGrange Police Department is proud to recognize all of the officers for their prompt action and professional engagement consistent with the high standards of LPD and the City of LaGrange.
Dekmar said they will present the remaining Lifesaving Awards at the conclusion of 2023.
