With so many things coming to downtown LaGrange, there was some confusion from residents as to where the planned second Nutwood Winery location with a restaurant will be located.

The restaurant is still in development but is planned for the corner of Byron Hurst St. and Main St. next to Wild Leap Brew Co.

Nutwood co-owner Neil Liechty said they purchased the property over the summer from the Callaway Foundation and plan to renovate a former furniture upholstery shop on the property into the new restaurant.

Liechty presented plans for the new location at the council work session on Tuesday, which would include an outdoor courtyard with a fire pit and a full-service restaurant with an upscale menu.

The new restaurant would be across the road from the long-planned downtown apartments.

In November 2021, the City of LaGrange announced plans for a $41 million downtown apartment complex that would take the place of the former Loy’s Furniture Supply and Stephens Exclusives in the 200 block of Main St.

The original plan for the apartments called for the demolition of both buildings, but it appears that little work, if any, has been done in over a year since the project was first announced.

LaGrange Assistant City Manager Bill Bulloch confirmed that the downtown apartments development by EYC Companies is still in the works.

When the project was originally announced, the Callaway Foundation said it would invest $2 million for a parking garage to support the 144-unit apartment complex. The City of LaGrange also agreed to pitch in $1 million for the parking garage through the DDA for. The county also agreed to a property tax absorption schedule over 10 years based on the performance and return of the apartments.

“They’re still working with them. It’s still in process,” Bulloch said. “Whether it comes to fruition is another story.”

Bulloch said they have a group meeting scheduled in January to meet with the developer for an update on the project.
