There was a time, really not that long ago, where you’d hear people complain about the proposal for a skate park in LaGrange.

Many were excited about the plans, but there were more than a few naysayers. The most popular complaints went something like this:

“Who in the world is going to use a skate park in LaGrange?”

“Why would they put a skate park in that part of town?”

In two months, we’re coming up on the four-year anniversary of the skate park, and we sure hope the naysayers have driven by recently.

On Sunday afternoon, on a beautiful day of cool, crisp weather, the skate park was packed. And it wasn’t just teenagers. Kids and adults of all ages were using the skate park. By all ages, we mean kids who were probably 3 and up. There were scooters, bicycles and skateboards zipping by in every direction.

In a sense, it was the perfect blend of community. People of all different backgrounds, ages and non-motorized transportation were sharing the same space, doing tricks, riding back and forth and looking out for one another.

And it’s not as if this particular Sunday was an anomaly. The skate park is always a popular spot, especially during the weekends.

There are times — early mornings — where a family can still get to Southbend Park and be one of the only ones there, but that’s about the only time where there isn’t a lot of activity.

After four years, the park still looks as beautiful as it ever did. And the skate park is as busy as ever.

So, who’s going to use a skate park in LaGrange? Apparently, everyone.
