It was not to be for the LaGrange boys basketball team, who lost 60-57 to Whitewater in the region tournament semifinals on Thursday despite a late rally from the Grangers.
The first quarter was neck and neck with the Wildcats taking a 19-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. A bit of an offensive slump in the second quarter saw the Grangers end up trailing at half by 10.
LaGrange rallied at halftime and came out of the break with more energy. The Grangers were able to cut the deficit down to six with Devin Dowell leading the charge with 11 points in the quarter.
The Grangers were able to trim the deficit down to just a single score late in the fourth, but the Wildcats continuously found ways to make winning plays.
Isiah Green nearly brought the Grangers back in the fourth quarter when he connected on two big 3-pointers. It was not enough for the Grangers, but Green gave them some pop off the bench with 12 points.
Dowell led LaGrange with 14 points while Garrett Jacobsen gave the Grangers a solid 11 points. Jaylen Young finished with seven points.
LaGrange will now be on the road in the playoffs as the team can only finish as a third or fourth seed after Thursday’s loss. The Grangers will play in the third-place game against Trinity Christian on Friday at Whitewater High School.
