It took the LaGrange girls soccer team less than 20 minutes to mercy rule Riverdale 10-0 in the Grangers region opener.
“I’m thankful we got through without any injuries, LaGrange coach Jon Callahan said. “I’m thankful we got a good result in a timely fashion, which saves us some legs.”
The girls came out and took no mercy on their opponents. All the usual suspects got on the scoresheet including a hat-trick from Karley Perry. Tatum Fritchley was more adventurous going forward against a weak back line and got herself a hat-trick of goals as well.
After scoring her first varsity goal last week, Reese Humphries was able to add another to her tally against Riverdale.
Sam Cottle scored two goals, including one from the penalty spot.
Freshman Rylan Burton scored her first career varsity goal in what was a welcome sight for her coach.
“I was thankful to see Ryan Burton get a goal,” Callahan said. “She is new to the varsity program, and she was active and ran hard and was rewarded for that.”
Junior Morgan Faucett returned from an injury and got her first start on the season.
“She got the start today and it was good for her,” Callahan said. “She had a hamstring injury, and that can be tricky and take a long time.”
Goalkeeper Emma Maradik was not forced to make any saves as she was able to keep her third clean sheet on the season.
LaGrange is 4-6 overall and 1-0 in region play. The Grangers will play Sprayberry at a neutral site on Saturday before returning to region play on Tuesday away to Trinity Christian, which could prove to be a big game with long-term ramifications for the region standings.
“I want to see a very good defensive effort and attacking soccer,” Callahan said. “I want to see heart, desire and effort.”
