Troup took the narrowest of losses, 5-4, on Tuesday as the Tigers lost to fellow region contender Whitewater at home in the region opener. The game was on a knife’s edge with both teams trading punches for seven innings.
The Wildcats struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Tigers had a quick response with three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Josh McDonald grounded into a fielder’s choice that allowed Ty Medders to score and tie the game. Medders gave the Tigers some early offensive momentum by belting the first pitch from the Wildcats into right field for a double.
An error allowed Devon Murphy to score the run that gave the Tigers an early lead. Carson Walker added to the Tigers’ cause by hitting an RBI single.
Troup held the lead until the Wildcats scored three runs of their own in the top of the third inning to take a 4-3 lead.
The Tigers got a runner in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings but could not capitalize and tie the game or take the lead. The Wildcats hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to add to their lead.
Troup got a run back when Jaxon Duncan scored in the bottom of the sixth inning but left the tying run stranded on third base. The Tigers got a runner on in the seventh but could not find a way to extend the game.
Troup is now 8-5 on the season and 0-1 in region play. The Tigers will have a chance to avenge this loss when they travel to Whitewater on Thursday for another important early region meeting.
