The Troup baseball team had to work for it but the Tigers edged out Fayette County 3-1 to keep their playoff hopes alive.
After going down a run in the first inning, the Tigers did not panic and rallied to get a crucial region victory. It was not always pretty but Troup turned the game around quickly with two runs in the second and an additional one in the third inning.
Carson Spears got the action started for the Tigers when he scored on a wild pitch. Three pitches later Will Keeter would drive in the winning run on a single with two outs. Troup got an insurance run in the third inning when Carson Walker hit an RBI single.
The Tigers got just three hits in the game — one apiece from Josh McDonald, Walker, and Keeter — but came up with timely offensive plays when it mattered most.
Devon Murphy was the difference in the game, pitching a complete game with only five hits and one earned run allowed on nine strikeouts. After a slow opening inning Murphy found his groove and ensured that Fayette County could get little to nothing going on offense.
Troup has now won six in a row to improve to 14-8 overall and 6-4 in region play. The Tigers will be back on the diamond on the road Thursday to Bleckley County.
