As of the close of qualifying on March 31, two candidates have qualified to run for the District 1 seat vacated by former councilman Jim Arrington.

Arrington and Terry Stanford have qualified to run for the seat on June 20, said Elections Supervisor Andy Harper.

Arrington is seeking to retake his former seat after an unsuccessful bid for the mayor of LaGrange. Both Arrington and now-mayor Willie Edmondson resigned on Jan. 24 to run for mayor. Their seats would have automatically been vacated the following day when they qualified to run for mayor.

Both men resigned to allow the remaining council members to appoint District 2 runner-up Quay Boddie to fill the vacant seat of Edmondson in order to have a quorum for subsequent meetings. Only Edmondson’s seat was eligible for the appointment because he had less than a year left on his term unlike Arrington, whose former seat goes through 2025.

The council seats currently held by councilmen Leon Childs and Boddie will be on the ballot in November.

Childs won a runoff over Boddie in December to fill the unexpired term of the late LeGree McCamey. Boddie was later appointed to fill Edmondson’s vacated seat. Both terms were scheduled to end this year.

The seat currently held by councilman Mark Mitchell will also be on the ballot on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023.
